The Kapellbrücke or Chapel Bridge in Lucerne spans the Reuss River which bisects the heart of Old Town Lucerne. This covered wooden bridge was built in 1333 and contains 17th century paintings mounted in the roof trusses of the bridge. A Wasserturm or water tower is part of the bridge complex. One would assume that with a name like the Wasserturm, Water Tower, that it holds water but it's named as such because it's standing in water. The bridge and tower are notable icons of Lucerne.

We were amazed at the wonderful flower boxes that line both sides of the bridge containing tens of thousands of flowers. Maintaining and watering this many flower boxes is more than a full time job.

Next to the Kapellbrücke is the Spreuer Bridge, another covered wooden bridge spanning the river and just like the Kapellbrücke bridge, it contains 17th century paintings on wood.
